Start with the metal, then move past it
Gold gets weighed on a certified scale and tested for karat. That gives a floor: the melt value of the metal. It is the easiest part of the valuation and usually the least interesting, because most jewelry worth lending against is worth more than its melt.
A signed piece with active demand, a well-cut stone, a clean setting. Those add value above the floor. A broken chain with a missing clasp does not, which is why scrap gets priced as scrap.
Stones get their own conversation
A diamond is judged on cut, colour, clarity and carat. With a laboratory report the conversation is quick. Without one it takes longer and the offer carries a discount for the uncertainty. We will tell you whether paying for a certificate is likely to pay for itself before you spend the money.
Small stones in a setting usually get valued as part of the piece. A line bracelet with fifty small diamonds is not fifty separate transactions.
Why the loan lands below resale value
The loan is a fraction of what the item would reliably resell for, because the shop carries the risk of holding it, insuring it and selling it if you do not come back. Every licensed pawnbroker runs the same arithmetic. Any of them should be willing to walk you through it.
If the number feels low, ask which factor drove it. Sometimes the answer is condition or a missing certificate. Sometimes the market for that particular piece is thin this month.
