Selling pays more, once
An outright sale is a single number with no interest and no deadline. If you do not need the item, selling almost always nets more than borrowing against it and paying a month of interest.
The risk is regret. Selling is final, and the piece goes onto a floor where the next person prices it against what they can get for it.
Borrowing keeps the door open
A pawn loan keeps ownership. You redeem inside 30 days, or pay the interest to extend, and the item comes home. For an heirloom, for a watch you will wear again next season, or for anyone expecting their situation to improve, that matters more than the extra money.
The trap is optimism. If redeeming in 30 days is unlikely, the loan becomes an expensive way to delay a sale you are going to make anyway, and it puts the item at risk of being sold by the shop instead.
One question that settles it
Where will this item be in six weeks? If the answer is back in your drawer, borrow. If the answer is that you will not miss it, sell. If you do not know, borrow for one term and treat the interest as the price of finding out.
